Rampage Roars At Number One Despite Close Call From A Quiet Place

Rampage managed to come out on top this weekend but the real story is how well A Quiet Place held up and how close it came to repeating at number one.

With an estimated $34.5 million, Rampage finishes at number one for the weekend. The film was tracking as high as $40 million which brings it below expectations but the film did see a surge from families on Saturday. Friday analyst actually had A Quiet Place likely to finish first due to its strong showing on Friday the 13th but Rampage made up some ground the rest of the weekend. Rampage has one more weekend to make an impression before Avengers: Infinity War destroys all the competition but with a budget of $120 million, the film is going to need a boost from overseas markets. The film opened to $114.1 million overseas, with $55 million of that from China so it’s off to a decent start so far. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore which bodes well for decent word of mouth but this is one of those movies that goes a long way to test the bankability of The Rock who has managed to turn most of his recent projects (except Baywatch) into international hits.

Holding very well in second is A Quiet Place with an estimated $32.6 million. That’s just a 35.1% drop which is top notch for horror. Good reviews and word of mouth are at play here and the Friday the 13th bump didn’t hurt either. The film has grossed $99.6 million to date and will probably hold incredibly next weekend as well.

Debuting in third is Truth Or Dare with an estimated $19 million. Blumhouse has done it again as the $3.5 million film was profitable after its opening night. Even if the film tumbles hard, it’s still likely to gross $45-50 million in the states and like other Blumhouse releases should be decent overseas as well. The film received a “B-” CinemaScore which is ok for a horror title.

Dropping to fourth is Ready Player One with an estimated $11.2 million. That’s a steep 54.5% drop but the film had a good start and good hold in week two so that softens the blow a bit. The film has grossed $114.6 million domestically & an impressive $475 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five is Blockers with an estimated $10.2M. That’s a surprising drop of 49.9% and that seems steep considering the good reviews and what seemed like decent word of mouth but maybe it can level off. The film has grossed $36.9 million on a $21 million budget and I wouldn’t be surprised if the film found even larger life when it hits home release.
