We are a week away from Avengers: Infinity War so that means we have to settle for one more boring weekend at the box office before the universe is shaken up by the MCU behemoth. This weekend will allow one our holdovers to either stay at number one or reclaim the top spot while one new release will do ok, yet forgettable business.
The gap between Rampage and A Quiet Place has been pretty small since last weekend started. Rampage took the crown but once the weekend was over, it has been a bit of a back and forth between two films. A Quiet Place won the box office on Monday while Rampage roared back into first on Tuesday. This all means the top spot could go either way and I’m going to predict it will be close but A Quiet Place could clinch a small win.
What could push A Quiet Place over the hump is that word of mouth is still very strong and it’s more of a water cooler movie than the likes of Rampage. People all over are talking about their experience viewing A Quiet Place and I don’t think Rampage has had that same reaction. The family audience pushed the arcade-based film ahead last weekend because Saturday is more of a rush for families but the opening weekend freshness may come off of Rampage as it goes into weekend two.
Then again, that family audience could do the same for the film this weekend as well. A Quiet Place could likely win Friday and Rampage could surge again on Saturday. It will all come down to how strong the Friday gross is for A Quiet Place and if it’s enough to create enough distance between the two films in case Rampage gets the family Saturday bump. In the end, I think A Quiet Place takes it ever so slightly with $22 million for the weekend while Rampage will settle for $20 million.
Amy Schumer and her new comedy, I Feel Pretty, will have to settle for third this weekend. I feel like there hasn’t been a huge marketing push for this film despite the popularity of Amy Schumer. Whatever awareness is out there is because of her fans and there hasn’t been a lot in terms of promotion to entice audiences who may not have fully embraced her on the big screen. The film carries a rotten score of 35% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing and tracking has it opening lower than her previous two comedic outings: Snatched ($19.5 million) & Trainwreck ($30 million). This weekend is a nice sampling weekend before one film takes over the box office next week and I Feel Pretty could benefit a bit from that sampling but long-term business will be questionable. I predict about $15 million for the weekend.
