Ralph Breaks The Internet Leads Holiday Box Office With Second Largest Thanksgiving Opening

Once again, Disney has a lot to be thankful for this morning as it has another success story with Ralph Breaks the Internet over the Thanksgiving frame.

Ralph Breaks the Internet opened at number one over the long weekend with $84.5 million over five days & $55.6 million over three days. The opening ranks it as the second largest Thanksgiving opening behind Frozen and Disney actually secures the top three largest openings for the Thanksgiving frame. Ralph Breaks the Internet was a hit with critics (86% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and with audiences who granted it with an “A-” CinemaScore. Internationally, Ralph delivered an estimated $41.5 million from 18 markets for a $125.9 million global debut. Disney should see great legs from the sequel in the weeks ahead and be a huge hit for the studio.

Also impressing in second place is Creed II with $55.8 million over five days and $35.2 million over three days. The sequel earned a few bragging rights with this debut by becoming the largest live-action debut for the Thanksgiving holiday (seventh overall) and it opened $16 million ahead of the original film. Creed II was also embraced by most critics (82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) audiences granted the film with an “A” CinemaScore (Creed scored the same rating back in 2015). The original film tapped out at $109.7 million domestic and with the larger start, the sequel should be able to top that gross.

Dropping to third is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald with $42.9 million over five days and $29.6 million over three days. The film saw a 52.3% decline weekend to weekend in relation to its three-day gross which is a bit hefty for the $200 million film. The movie has grossed $117.1 million at the domestic box office but, once again, this film is a global player and its international grosses are going to allow the film to be a hit. With an additional $83.7 million internationally this weekend, the film was once again the #1 film globally for the second weekend in a row with a worldwide gross that now totals $439.7 million.

Falling to fourth is The Grinch with $42 million over five days and $30.2 million over three days. Technically, The Grinch would place third if we were just factoring in the three day weekend but Fantastic Beasts edged it out slightly with the five day gross. The decline is a slim 21.7% weekend to weekend which is a stellar hold considering the film was facing direct competition from Ralph Breaks the Internet. The film has grossed $180.4 million at the domestic box office and it has more money to make in the coming weeks as we head into the Christmas season.

Rounding out the top five is Bohemian Rhapsody with $19.3 million over five days and $13.8 million over three days. The film continues to sing with a slim 13.6% decline weekend to weekend as word of mouth is still proving to be strong for the biopic. Bohemian Rhapsody now brings its domestic total to $152 million and it also added an additional $38 million internationally this weekend, pushing its global tally to $472.1 million.
