Sneak Peek: Pennywise in Andy Muschietti’s It

Back in July, Entertainment Weekly gave horror fans the first look at Pennywise the Clown from the new film version of Stephen King’s It directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama).

Today, they’ve released Pennywise’s full look and boy is it terrifying. The two-part film will first hit theaters on September 8, 2017. Here’s your first look at the sinister clown.

Pennywise

Different from Tim Curry’s version in the 1990’s miniseries film, this version of Pennywise’s costume goes more old school. Designed by Janie Bryant of Deadwood and Mad Men fame, the suit is more fitted and draws inspiration from the Medieval, Renaissance, Victorian eras. It has a classic jester harlequin quality to the seams, drawing up to his fangs and bisected eyes. He has the puffy collar and every part of the costume is meant to suggest something both ancient and disturbed. Bryant explained her design in detail stating,

“There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality. Even the gloves are so tight and seamless they make his hands look like porcelain.”

Pennywise is intended to camouflage himself and strike rather than lure children. “It makes him almost like a shadow,” said Bryant.
