Pacific Rim: Uprising Dethrones Black Panther At The Box Office

It had to happen eventually and after 5 weeks at number one, Black Panther relinquished the top spot to Pacific Rim: Uprising. That doesn’t mean Black Panther still isn’t breaking box office records.

Our number one film this weekend is Pacific Rim: Uprising with $28 million. This isn’t a stellar opening but it is slightly above most box office tracking. It is below the $37 million opening of the first film but the $155 million film was greenlit mostly because of its international appeal, particularly in China. The film opened to $122.5 million overseas with $65 million coming from China alone. Will the investment be worth it? Likely but it still has a ways to go.

Black Panther drops to second with $16.6 million and brings its domestic total to over $630 million. This total makes it the highest grossing comic book adaptation of all-time, surpassing The Avengers ($623.3 million). The film is also now the fifth largest overall domestic release of all-time, just $21.3 million shy of Jurassic World. Its global total also continues to shine with a gross of $1.2 billion so far.

Falling to third is I Can Only Imagine with $13.8 million. The faith-based film held well in week two and has a total gross of over $38 million on a $7 million budget.

Sherlock Gnomes debuted in fourth place with a disappointing $10.6 million. Gnomeo and Juliet opened to $25.3 million in 2011 so this is a big drop off. The studio hopes spring break will bring out the kids but this isn’t a great start.

Dropping to fifth is Tomb Raider with $10.4 million. That’s a 56% drop and I think with that, franchise hopes are potentially dead. The film has grossed over $41 million on a $90 million budget but internationally the film is making an impression with a worldwide total of $211.7 million.
