Oscar Snafu: The Culprit Revealed

If you were at any Oscar party last night you heard cheers (and some jeers) when La La Land was announced as the winner for best picture. You saw it coming, it was written in the stars and it was totally expected.

Then something crazy happened. The La La Land team was on stage and WHOOPS! SORRY! Actually Moonlight won and then your Oscar party got a little crazy as the Super Bowl of movies suddenly got very interesting.

At first most were quick to blame Warren Beatty. Did he have a senior moment? Was he drunk? Maybe slightly senile? Perhaps it was the rumored argument between he and Faye Dunaway over who would read the envelope that got things all mixed up. It was funnier on Twitter to blame him but it turns out he wasn’t to blame and now the real culprit is speaking out.

The Best Picture gaffe that marred last night’s Oscar broadcast was caused by a doppelganger Best Actress envelope mistaken for the night’s final prize, which caused the unprecedented screw-up that temporarily bestowed the top trophy to La La Land instead of rightful winner Moonlight. Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers confirmed just now that the fault was theirs:

“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land,Warren BeattyFaye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation”.

I have to give credit to La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who handled the situation with class. It couldn’t have been easy to rectify that situation live on stage but he dealt with it like a champ and passed it on to Moonlight with dignity.

Who says the Oscars are dull?
