New Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot Officially Happening

Leatherface is getting ready for another comeback. A reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been in the works for a bit but it has been made official with directors being signed on for the project.

Legendary has assigned Ryan and Andy Tohill to reboot the 1974 film & Fede Alvarez, the filmmaker behind Don’t Breathe, is producing with Rodolfo Sayagues via their Bad Hombre banner. Plot details are being kept under wraps but this isn’t the first time The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been rebooted. Back in 2003 Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes rebooted the movie to box office success, leading to a 2006 prequel. Lionsgate followed that up with two other new entries in the franchise, Texas Chainsaw 3D and Leatherface. Those particular entries were not well-received by critics or fans.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is an interesting one. The first film is widely considered a horror classic but its subsequent sequels are a mixed bag, to say the least. Out of all the big horror franchises from back in the day, I’d say this one is probably one of the rockiest.

Legendary landed the rights around the time the studio signed Bad Hombre to a first-look deal and saw an opportunity to relaunch the franchise all over again. As for the directors tasked to take this on, The Tohill’s first feature film, The Dig, premiered at the Galway Film Festival in 2018, winning best Irish feature. It was accepted at the Toronto International Film Festival and scored a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards in 2018.
