NBC Upfront Presentation Shows Strong Confidence In New Amsterdam, Unveils All Chicago Wednesdays

NBC unveiled its 2018-19 fall schedule at their Upfront Presentation and it’s clear that they’re expecting big things from their new medical drama, New Amsterdam.

The new series will launch on Tuesdays at 10 PM this fall, immediately after their ratings powerhouse This Is Us. The series stars Ryan Eggold, who has a history with the network due to his time on The Blacklist.

It’s clear that the network sees the longterm potential in medical dramas even citing their own Chicago Med as well as ABC’s The Good Doctor as prime examples of medical shows that viewers are hooked on.

All three Dick Wolf Chicago shows will be on the same night and air back-back-back on Wednesday nights. Chicago Med will lead off at 8 PM, followed by Chicago Fire and then Chicago PD. The 20th season of Law & Order: SVU will move to Thursdays at 10 PM.

Another new drama, Manifest, is also getting a strong lead-in, airing at 10 PM on Mondays following The Voice. The series is a mystery thriller about the crew and passengers on a plane who discover that five years have passed in the time they were in the air. It’s being described as “Lost in reverse” and it could be the kind of buzzy show that’s a hit with viewers.

The Thursday comedy block is pretty much the same with Superstore leading things off followed by The Good Place. The second revival season of Will & Grace will then lead into new comedy I Feel Bad from executive producer Amy Poehler. As mentioned above, SVU will camp off Thursday night.

The biggest move is on Friday nights with the sixth season of The Blacklist moving from Wednesday to Friday at 9 PM. The move will take place in January and will allow the show to run consecutively without interruptions. Blindspot will remain on Fridays at 8 PM and before The Blacklist joins the lineup in January, Midnight, Texas will return for its second season in the fall. It originally aired its first season on Monday’s during the summer.

The other new dramas on the slate which include The Village, The Enemy Within, and The InBetween will launch midseason. The same scheduling tactic applies to new comedy Abby’s and the sixth season of the canceled by FOX then revived by NBC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The second season of Good Girls will also premiere midseason.

The network has yet to make a decision on the low-rated comedy Champions as well as the fan favorite, yet ratings-challenged, Timeless. The network said a decision on those shows will be made in the coming days.
