Moana Opens Big At Number One While Other Newbies Stumble

Disney’s latest animated effort, Moana, took the number one spot over the long Thanksgiving weekend with an estimated $55.5 million over three days and a massive $81.1 million over five days. The five-day opening ranks as the second largest Thanksgiving opening after another Disney adventure, Frozen ($93.6 million over five days).

Moana’s demographic breakdown was 45% male vs. 55% female with 34% of the audience coming in 12 years or under, 43% over the age of 25 and 72% of the audience made up of families. Opening day audiences gave the film an “A”CinemaScore which bodes well for the film’s prospects moving forward. Critics love this one too with a solid 98% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them held up well in second place for its week two showing with $45.1 million over three days and $65.76 million over five days. This brings its domestic gross to an estimated $156.2 million after ten days in release. Additionally, the film added $132 million internationally this weekend, fueled by openings in China and Japan where it brought in an estimated $41.1 million and $15.5 million respectively. The film’s global gross now stands at $473.7 million.

Finishing in third is Doctor Strange with $13.36 million over three days and $18.85 million over five days. It now has a total gross of $205 million and is now the tenth film in The Marvel Cinematic Universe to gross over $200 million. Its worldwide  gross stands at $615.9 million and it still has Japan to open up in so the film still has some gas in it.

Finishing in fourth is the second of the new releases this weekend, Allied. The film stumbles out the gate a bit with $13 million over three days and $18 million over five days. While this is within some expectations heading into the weekend, the fact this one wasn’t able to top $20 million is a disappointment, especially given the $85 million production budget. For director Robert Zemeckis this is the second disappointment in a row after The Walk last year, which grossed $10.1 million domestically and $61.1 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. The film played to an audience that was 51% male vs 49% female of which 85% were over the age of 25. Opening day audiences gave it a “B” CinemaScore.

Holding up impressively in fifth is Arrival with $11.25 million over three days and $15.6 million over five days. That’s only a slim 7.3% drop weekend to weekend and the $47 million film now has a gross of $62.38 million to date.

The last two new releases this weekend opened outside the top five with Bad Santa 2 opening in 8th place with $6.1 million over three days and $9 million over five days. The film is cheap at $26 million but it won’t see that domestically as I think too much time passed between the original film to keep people interested. Debuting in 2,382 theaters, Rules Don’t Apply delivered an estimated $1.57 million three-day weekend and $2.17 million five-day. The three-day result is the worst wide opening of 2016, averaging just $661 per theater.
