Although the talks are in the early stages, Melissa McCarthy is being eyed by Disney to play Ursula in their live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
No deal has been reached as of yet but both parties, according to reports, seem keen on moving forward if everything works out. Rob Marshall, who directed last year’s Mary Poppins Returns, is helming the film & it will feature Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s songs from the original 1989 animated feature and new songs from Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Since there isn’t an official deal made as of yet fans of Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, have voiced their opinion on Twitter that she should be given the role and Lizzo doubled down on that by posting a video of her singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from the 1989 film:
I’M URSULA. PERIOD. @Disney pic.twitter.com/9YPVPPvVpz

While Lizzo has two albums out, she only has one acting credit to her name for a one episode shot in the role of “Alex” in The Memestar Chronicles, a 2017 TV series.
