Marvel Searching For Female Directors For Black Widow Spinoff

Talks about a Black Widow spin-off film began some time ago but they’re really heating up recently with Marvel said to be really pushing forward on the project as they search for the right female voice to direct the film.

Apparently, a list of 49 potential directors has been narrowed down to a shortlist of three. Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) are in play but media sources are saying that Cate Shortland is the frontrunner of the group of three. Her recent credits include Lore and most recently Berlin Syndrome. All three directors have recently met with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Scarlett Johansson to pitch their respective ideas for the standalone film.

Black Widow has been biding her time as a supporting player in the MCU, beginning with Iron Man 2 in 2010. Scarlett Johansson has since taken the role through various films in the MCU but she has been a fan favorite to receive her very own film. With the success of film’s such as Wonder Woman, it’s no surprise that this project is ready to move forward.

  1. As much as I love ScarJo, I don’t think widow needs a solo film. The little tidbits that they share about her in each movie is enough. There’s supposed to be a mystery to who she is.
