Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for their $30 million Toronto Film Festival pickup, Malcolm & Marie. The film stars Zendaya and John David Washington & it has already generated some Oscar buzz leading up to its debut.
The romantic drama comes from writer-director Sam Levinson, who also created the Zendaya-led HBO series, Euphoria, & it tells the story of a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) who return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical & financial success. The evening eventually takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.
Malcolm & Marie actually secretly filmed during the height of the pandemic in Los Angeles & was notable for being one of the first productions to get back to work. Netflix coughed up $30 million for the rights to the film based solely on a promo shown at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Malcolm & Marie hits Netflix on February 5.
