Our favorite animated alien is coming back! Lilo & Stitch, the 2002 animated movie from Walt Disney Feature Animation, is getting the live-action treatment.
Up-and-comer Mike Van Waes has been chosen to write the script for the remake that will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, formerly known as Lin Pictures. The two are already known in the Disney world as they are working on the high-profile live-action remake of Aladdin.
In the original film, the Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers, and the idea of the bond of family figure into the proceedings.
The film wasn’t a huge success on the scale of The Lion King but it was a bright spot financially and critically during a down time for Disney due to a few clunkers on their post-Lion King filmography. The film spun two direct-to-video sequels, Stitch! The Movie (2003) and Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005) as well as a series titled, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, and a TV movie, Leroy & Stitch.
