The mind-bending mutant saga is coming to an end. FX has announced that the upcoming third season of Legion will be its last.
The series isn’t ending because the network is giving up on the critically acclaimed show. Creator Noah Hawley has always had a three-season plan and he’s sticking to that vision. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association press tour.
FX has stood behind the series, even though season 2 ratings took a bit of a hit. Same-day viewership fell by more than half to 430,000 viewers with a week of delayed viewing pushing it to 1 million viewers. That is about half of the seven-day number from season one.
Legion, based on an offshoot of the X-Men franchise, centers on David Haller (Dan Stevens), whose history of psychiatric issues lead to his discovery that he has mutant powers. The series also stars Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, Jeremie Harris, Jean Smart, Jemaine Clement, Katie Aselton, Navid Neganban, & Hamish Linklater.
Season three of Legion premieres in June.
