Coming Soon: Kubrick By Kubrick

A new teaser has dropped for Kubrick by Kubrick, the latest documentary by French filmmaker Gregory Monro. The film was set to premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, but since it was called off in March, some elements of the program are set to premiere online instead.

The film is based on conversations that director Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining) had with film critic Michel Ciment, editor of Positif, a French film magazine. Ciment had a three-decade-long relationship with the filmmaker and conducted many interviews with him throughout his career. Kubrick famously avoided the press and gave few interviews throughout his career. Exploring Kubrick’s 50-year filmography, the documentary will also include new material from the Kubrick estate.

The Tribeca Film Festival description reads as such:

“Stanley Kubrick’s mark on the legacy of cinema can never be measured. He was a giant in his field, his great works resembling pristine pieces of art, studied by students and masters alike, all searching for answers their maker was notoriously reticent to give. While he’s among the most scrutinized filmmakers that ever lived, the chance to hear Kubrick’s own words was a rarity — until now.

“Unspooling exclusive new recordings of detailed interviews with the mythic director spanning 30 years that ruminate on his philosophies, documentarian Gregory Monro weaves a tapestry of archival footage with the rhythm and care of a consummate historian relishing in his discoveries. No stranger to investigating legends of the screen, Monro’s exuberant and lyrical cinematic essay is vital. Taking viewers on a journey beyond Jupiter, Kubrick by Kubrick celebrates the essence of what film means to those who make it — and those who watch.”

Monro is also well known for his films about Hollywood icons who’ve touched cinema in one way or another like James Stewart, Robert Mitchum, Jerry Lewis, Calamity Jane, and artist Toulouse-Lautrec.

No word yet on how the film will be released or when specifically. Until then, we have this teaser.
