2017’s biggest surprise, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has broken another record as it has become Sony’s top-grossing title ever at the domestic box office.
The film accomplished the milestone this week as it has surpassed the original Spider-Man, which grossed $403.7 million at the box office in 2002. On the other hand, Jumanji, which was released Dec. 20, finished Tuesday with a domestic total of $403.71 million.
One of the biggest benefits for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is that it had a consistent staying power at the box office. It topped the chart for four weekends in total, including three consecutive weekends, and became the first December wide release since 1997’s Titanic to top the chart in February. It also is the highest-grossing film for stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart. Tony Rothman, Sony picture chairman stated,
“Given the length of Columbia Pictures’ esteemed history, this is a cool milestone,” . “It gives us a grand target to shoot for with the next one.”
Jumanji is now available on Blu-ray.
