In what seems like a perfect pairing, Jordan Peele is in talks to produce a remake of 1992’s Candyman through his Monkeypaw Productions.
It’s unclear at this point if Peele would also direct but the original film’s director, Bernard Rose, expressed interest two years ago that he would like to return to direct a proper sequel and bring back Virginia Madsen to star. The film spawned two sequels, one released theatrically and another direct to video, but they were poorly received.
The franchise has been dormant for nearly 20 years. The rights have become available once again with Tri-Star releasing the first two films while Artisan was behind the 1999 straight to video release. It’s unclear who the rights holder is now but it is open to grabbed up and the word is that Peele is interested in doing so.
1992’s Candyman was adapted from Clive Barker’s “Books of Blood” short story “The Forbidden”. The film follows the urban legend of Candyman (Tony Todd) who was an artist and son of a slave who had his hand severed and was murdered by his lover’s father. The victims in the film find if you say his name five times that bad things definitely happen as he has become a legend in the housing development of Chicago.
