It: Chapter Two Maintains The Top Spot But Hustlers Makes It Rain With $33.1 Million Debut

It: Chapter Two maintained the top position for a second weekend but the real story is how Hustlers made it rain over the weekend & surged over its box office tracking.

It: Chapter Two grossed $39.6 Million, down 56.5% from its opening weekend. Considering that some thought it would tumble about 60%, the hold is actually pretty decent. The domestic total is now at $152.6 million & while it is lagging behind its predecessor, it’s still a bonafide hit for the genre. The horror sequel also added $47 million from international territories & has now grossed $323.3 million worldwide.

In second we have Hustlers which grossed $33.1 million. That’s well over the $23-30 million the film was tracking at ahead of the weekend & shows you how well STX Entertainment marketed the film. The opening is the largest in STX’s short history, topping the $23.8 million opening for Bad Moms back in 2016. It’s also the largest live-action opening for star, Jennifer Lopez, topping the $23.1 million for Monster-in-Law back in 2005. This is also a top opening for a female-led cast of diverse performers. Certainly a nice thing to see. The film is 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes while it received a “B-” CinemaScore (likely from those hoping for more Cardi B or Lizzo). If the film has legs it has a shot to top Bad Moms $113 million final gross to become the companies highest grossing film. The commercial success also gives a boost to Jlo’s Oscar hopes as it raises the film’s profile & may make others take notice of the early Oscar buzz she has received for the film.

In third we have Angel Has Fallen still picking up pocket change with $4.4 million, down 25% from the previous weekend. The $40 million film has now grossed $60.4 million as it continues to pace ahead of its predecessor.

In fourth is the continued solid run of Good Boys which grossed $4.2 million. The film dropped a slim 22.9% and has now grossed $73.2 million on a $20 million budget. In addition to that, the film added another $1.8 million internationally this weekend for a worldwide gross that now tops $91 million with several overseas openings yet to come.

Rounding out the top five is The Lion King which spends its ninth weekend in the top five rankings with a gross of $3.6 million. The film dropped a very small 15.6% and now brings its domestic total to $534 million. The film is now the 12th largest domestic earner of all-time and it’s just a step behind The Dark Knight ($535.2 million) to take the eleventh spot.

Outside of the top five we find The Goldfinch, which crashed and burned in eighth place with $2.6 million. The performance is the sixth worst ever for a film debuting in over 2,500 locations & another loser for Warner Bros. after Shaft, The Kitchen, Blinded by the Light & The Sun is Also a Star. They’re probably really happy It: Chapter Two is doing well at this point. The film is 25% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes & received a “B”CinemaScore but reportedly when it’s all said and done the $45 million production will lose about $50 million for the studio.
