Comedies I Feel Pretty & Super Troopers 2 put up solid numbers in Thursday night previews which bodes well for a decent weekend for both comedies.
The Amy Schumer comedy pulled in $1 million from Thursday night previews in 2,600 locations beginning at 7 PM. For comparison’s sake, Schumer’s last comedic outing Snatched, pulled in $650,000 in Thursday night previews and went on to gross $19.5 million during its opening weekend. I predicted about $15 million for I Feel Pretty but it could possibly best that number with this preview gross in play.
Super Troopers 2, a sequel to the cult-classic original, fared even better in Thursday night previews with $1.35 million from just 925 locations that began at 4:20 PM. The film expands to 1,850 locations today. The original film, back in 2001, opened to $6.2 million and grossed $18.4 million by the end of its run. The real success for Super Troopers came after its theatrical release where it became a cult hit on DVD and has continued to thrive due to its cult status. We can’t compare Troopers 2 Thursday number to the original since it had no Thursday previews but we can compare it to the comedy Blockers from a couple of weeks ago. That film grossed $1.5 million in Thursday night previews and went on to open to $20 million. Super Troopers 2 was only tracking at $6 million for the weekend but now it seems it will surge well beyond that.
