Hotel Transylvania 3 Tops Box Office While Skyscraper Struggles

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation took advantage of being the new family offering since Incredibles 2 opened a few weeks ago and it paid off big for the latest installment of the popular franchise.

Hotel Transylvania 3 opened to $44 million over the weekend it puts it right in the middle of the pack of the previous two entries. The first film opened to $42.5 million while the sequel jumped to $48.5 million. Keep in mind that those two films were September releases so it was a bit of a gamble to open this one over the summer but it definitely paid off. The film, like the previous 2 outings, received an “A-” CinemaScore so word of mouth should be healthy moving forward.

Taking a steep drop to second is Ant-Man And The Wasp which collapsed 62% to $29 million. This is the biggest second-weekend drop for a film within the MCU which isn’t the bragging rights this film was looking for.  The film has a domestic total of $132.8 million and it will likely match the gross of the first film but $200 million, unless it sees solid holds in the coming weeks, seems unlikely. That being said, the film has grossed $283.7 million worldwide so all will be well in the end but it is likely to be viewed as one of their lower-tier releases from a financial standpoint.

Debuting in third, surprisingly, is Skyscraper with $24.9 million. This was tracking for second place with about $30-40 million but it came up short of that. This isn’t as bad as the $18.5 million debut for Dwayne Johnson’s Baywatch but it is one of his softer opening weekends. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore which is decent but I’m starting to think some people are getting a bit of Dwayne Johnson fatigue. Despite the soft domestic opening, that fatigue isn’t spreading overseas where the film opened to $40.4 million from 57 markets. Johnson promoted this one hard internationally and that will pay off for the film which carries a $125 million budget. Rampage came up short of the century mark with $99 million in the states but it grossed over $400 million worldwide which shows how much international appeal The Rock has.

Dropping to fourth is Incredibles 2 with $16.2 million. The film has grossed $535.8 million domestically and actually held on well considering it had competition from Hotel Transylvania 3. The film jumped over The Dark Knight to become the ninth highest grossing domestic film of all-time and now the question is does the film have enough gas in the tank to join the $600 million club? Wouldn’t surprise me if it does.

Falling to fifth is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with $16.1 million. The film has grossed $363.3 million which is off from the pace of the 2015 film but it has grossed $1.134 million worldwide which just proves that people still love seeing the dinosaur action.
