Fans of The Last of Us, rejoice. Creative director and writer of the hit game, Neil Druckmann, made the official announcement that Gustavo Santaolalla, the composer of the original TLOS score, will be returning to compose the score for the upcoming HBO series. As a composer, Santaolalla has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score for his work on Babel and Brokeback Mountain.
Well this is exciting! Beyond lending his incredible musical talent to The Last of Us Part II, Gustavo Santaolalla is joining us to bring over The Last of Us to HBO!

In this clip from 2013, Santaolalla discusses his process to create the music for The Last of Us and what inspired him to create the sounds of the post-apocalyptic world Joel and Ellie inhabit.
The Last of Us will see the hit dramatic survival action game hit the small screen with a script by Druckmann and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based developer of the game. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. It will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions.
Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, which initially came out in 2013, earned critical praise for its gripping tale of the post-apocalypse, centering on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be critical to a cure for a deadly pandemic. What starts as a small job soon becomes a cruel, heartbreaking journey as they depend on each other for survival.
The HBO series will cover the events of the original game, which was written by Druckmann, with the possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which will release May 29.
No word yet on an official release date for the series, but we’re estimating 2021-2022 season.
