The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced yesterday that it will extend eligibility requirements for movies at least until April 30th. There’s a possibility it could go further than that depending on how the coronavirus pandemic progresses. They even stated that films may qualify for consideration by the HFPA even if they do not first screen in a theater.
HFPA released a statement noting, “The HFPA will continue to assess the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on motion picture and television distribution and exhibition and may extend these suspensions of the Golden Globe award rules and/or may make other temporary variations to those rules as it considers appropriate in the future.”
Films “may instead be released first on a television format (e.g. subscription streaming service, subscription cable channel, broadcast television, etc.) and will still be eligible.” Changing the rules will help distributors and filmmakers alike who may be hesitant to hurt their Globes chances by sending their films to VOD or a streaming service.
The date for the 78th Golden Globes has not yet been announced, but Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have agreed to serve as its hosts.
