Not only is Doom Patrol getting a second season but it’s also getting a second home. The series will air simultaneously on its original home, DC Universe, and the WarnersMedia streaming service, HBO Max.
The news was announced by executive producer Jeremy Carver on Saturday during the series’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The next run of the show will premiere in 2020 but the number of episodes hasn’t been determined as of yet.
All 15 episodes of Doom Patrol’s first season will also be available on HBO Max when the service debuts next year. A beta release for the service could happen late 2019. The dual run will help HBO Max get to its goal of having some 10,000 hours of content available when it launches.
Doom Patrol was the second live-action scripted series to premiere on DC Universe and following Titans (also renewed for a second season). The service got a bit of bad press when Swamp Thing was canceled in early June, less than a week after its first episode debuted. The cancellation followed the series having its episode order cut from 13 to 10 episodes.
Doom Patrol features some of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Negative Man (Matt Bomer/Matthew Zuk), Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero). They are led by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) and they’re called into action by the ultimate hero for the digital age, Cyborg (Jovian Wade). The series is the most well-received DC Universe series to date, with season 1 holding an impressive 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
