Doogie Howser M.D. Reboot Coming To Disney+ With Female Lead

Another television reboot is headed our way. Disney+ is developing a reboot of former ABC dramedy Doogie Howser, M.D., that will feature a teenage girl as its lead.

The current working title is Doogie Kealoha, M.D. and the lead character is a half-Asian, half-white 16-year-old girl with a genius-level intellect who has breezed through college and medical school and is now working as a doctor in Hawaii. Before you say they’re just trying to make a statement by making the character a girl & half Asian, Kourtney Kang is the creative mind behind the show & the characters background reflects that of Kang. She also worked on How I Met Your Mother & Fresh Off the Boat.

Doogie Hoswer, M.D. was created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley & ran from 1989-93 on ABC. The series starred Neil Patrick Harris, who later worked with Kang on How I Met Your Mother, as the title character & also featured James B. Sikking and Belinda Montgomery as Doogie’s parents and Max Casella, Lisa Dean Ryan and Lucy Boryer as his teenage friends.
