Dear Evan Hansen Film Adaptation Sets September Release Date

Universal Pictures has set a wide theatrical release for an adaptation of the hit musical, Dear Evan Hansen. The film is set to hit screens on September 24, 2021.

The film, which stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and Amandla Stenberg, is directed by Stephen Chbosky & also sees Ben Platt reprising his Broadway character of Evan Hansen. Dear Evan Hansen takes the place of an Untitled Universal event movie on the September date amid a Hollywood release date shuffle sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. Dear Evan Hansen follows a high school student with a social anxiety disorder that takes advantage of the suicide of a classmate for his own emotional gain after accidentally letting a letter he wrote to himself be taken by the classmate, whose family mistakes it for being written by their son to Evan.

Dear Evan Hansen was nominated for nine awards at the 71st Tony Awards and the musical ended up taking six awards home, including Best Actor in a Musical for Ben Platt and Best Musical.
