Darren Criss won a much deserved Golden Globe for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and with that win, Criss made a bit of history.
The former Glee star became the first Filipino American to win a Golden Globe at last night’s ceremony. Criss took home the award in the category for Best Actor In A Limited Series and the series itself also took home the award for Best Television Limited Series. Criss previously won the Emmy for the role last year and he’s still up for a SAG Award for his performance and he’s the frontrunner to win at that ceremony as well.
During his acceptance speech on stage, Criss called Assassination “a grim story to make,” but also noted this had been “a marvelous year for representation for actors in Hollywood.” As the son of “a firecracker Filipino woman, I’m enormously proud to be a tiny part of that.”
Backstage, Criss also made more mentions about being proud of his heritage:
“I’ve said this before, but being half Filipino is one of my favorite things about me. I feel like I have been given a superhero cape and I am glad to step up to that plate.”
As for what Criss will do next? He has Roland Emmerich’s Midway on deck and I’m sure he’s now firmly a part of the Ryan Murphy School of Acting so I wouldn’t be surprised if he popped up with a significant role in another Murphy project.
