Contrary To Reports, Director Jon Watts Is Not Officially Locked In For New Spider-Man Films

After the recent news of the collapse of the Sony-Marvel Studios partnership that allowed Spider-Man to be used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the one constant part of the story was that director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland were a lock for at least two more films, no matter if they work out a new deal or simply becomes a solo Sony production. While Tom Holland is certainly still in for two more movies, reports of Jon Watts’ involvement were a bit premature.

According to “Deadline”, Watts isn’t attached to any future Spider-Man films at this time. It’s being reported that there is a good chance he might get snatched up to another project before he can return to spin Spider-Man’s web. It’s also heavily suggested that Watts is a strong contender for a future Marvel Studios film and it may be a fold he wants to remain with. Outside of the comic book world, Watts is also “being heavily courted for other jobs.”

At this point, Sony could potentially be vying for attention for Watts against Marvel and other studios. I’m not sure how many fans value what Watts did with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home but it was mostly his idea to play the film more like throwback coming of age films which have given the films a unique voice compared to the Spider-Man films before them.

As of this writing, neither Jon Watts or Sony have commented about his future status with the franchise.
