Directed by Jeff Nichols in his second film of 2016, the first being Midnight Special, Loving tells the story of the marriage of Mildred Jeter (Ruth Negga), a black woman, and Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton), a white man. It follows their arrest for interracial marriage, which violated Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws. They were sentenced to prison in 1958 and took their case to the Supreme Court, which led to Loving v. Virginia, holding that laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional.
