Charmed Reboot Still Alive At The CW

The CW surprised fans earlier this year when they announced plans to reboot the hit series Charmed, but since then there has been radio silence on the topic. The CW broke that silence yesterday during their TCA panel.

Presenting their upcoming shows at the TV Critics Association press tour, CW head Mark Pedowitz revealed that the reboot is still very much in the works, though not as originally developed.

“It’s in redevelopment. We’re waiting to see what Jennie Urman wants to come back with. … It’s early in the development process, but we’re redeveloping it, and hopefully, it will come out.”

The series is being redeveloped by Jane the Virgin creator Urman along with Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, who are listed as executive producers. Ben Silverman and Brad Silberling are also listed as executive producers on the project.

Charmed was one of the focal points of the network back when it was still WB, alongside other favorites like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Dawson’s Creek. The show revolves around three witches called the “Charmed Ones” who attempt to keep the world of humanity safe from the threats of the underworld using the power of three.

The series originally starred Shannen Doherty (Prue Halliwell), Holly Marie Combs (Piper Halliwell), and Alyssa Milano (Phoebe Halliwell), who made up the trio from 1998 to 2001. In 2001, Doherty left the show, replaced by Rose McGowan as Paige Matthews. The sisters would interact often with Brian Krause (Leo Wyatt), Dorian Gregory (Darryl Morris), and Julian McMahon (Cole Turner).

The show came to a close after eight seasons in 2006, but since then it has gone on to spawn a new comic series at Dynamite, which picks up the storyline of Piper, Phoebe, and Paige. It’s unknown whether the TV series would adapt the original three or the three that occupied the majority of the show, but either way, fans would certainly be happy to have the charmed ones back on television in some capacity.
