Hulu wants to scare us again! The streaming service has renewed Stephen Kings’s Castle Rock for a second season. The news comes after the series had one of the most successful launches for a Hulu original series in terms of consumption and reach.
Castle Rock is an original story that combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. It’s named for the fictional town in Maine that is featured prominently in a number of King’s books.
Castle Rock follows the business model that Hulu has adapted by doing big impact shows but not flooding the service with original content. The goal, according to CEO Randy Freer, is to not have a plethora of originals on the market. They want to focus on a few big projects and allow them to help the service grow. This is a similar tactic they took on with The Handmaid’s Tale.
The series is the second from King, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television, following the event series 11.22.63, based on King’s novel, which is also on Hulu.
