NBC isn’t having the best of luck with their new series. Days after announcing that their comedy Sunnyside would be pulled from the schedule after next week, they have also decides that their new legal drama, Bluff City Law, will not be getting a full-season order at the network.
The network will wrap production on the legal drama starring Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee after its initial 10-episode order. The network had ordered six additional scripts for the series as an early vote of confidence but the live ratings for the series have dipped week after week since its premiere. Four episodes of Bluff City Law have aired so far, and the show will remain in its 10 p.m. Monday slot for the remainder of its run. NBC hasn’t canceled the show, and the production is keeping the show’s Memphis, Tenn., sets intact for no.
So why not just outright cancel it? NBC has a streaming platform they’re launching so they will be evaluating if some of their weaker live performers could work better on the digital platform. This is a move that could save Sunnyside since it’s doing relatively ok digitally.
Through four episodes, initial airings have averaged a 0.65 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49 and about 4 million viewers. The first two installments improved to 1.1 in adults 18-49 and 7.39 million viewers with a week of delayed viewing.
