Black Panther Rules Box Office For The Third Straight Weekend

Black Panther remained the box office king while the newcomers came in below my predictions & tracking.

Black Panther secured the third best third weekend of all-time with a gross of $65.7 million. That puts it behind only Avatar ($68.5 million) & The Force Awakens ($90.2 million) so it’s in pretty solid copy. The film has grossed $500.1 million domestically & it reached this feat in 17 days. That ties it with Jurassic World & right behind The Force Awakens. Worldwide, the film is just short of $900 million which shows that a predominantly black cast can have mass international appeal.

Debuting in second is Red Sparrow with $17 million. The film was tracking a bit higher but it’s not a horrible start for the $69 million film. It received a “B” CinemaScore which indicates soft word of mouth but this is a film that has potential international appeal and that may break it even in the end.

Our last newcomer lands in third Aldo slightly below expectations. Death Wish grossed $13 million & while it’s off of tracking, it’s also not a bad debut. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore and seemed to work for its core demographic of men so this could ended up being a modest grosser in the end.

Falling to fourth is Game Night with $10.7 million. That’s a not bad drop of 37% and it brings its total to $33.5 million. I can see this tapping out a little above $50 million which would make it a solid investment for the studio.

Rounding out the top five is the surprise hit Peter Rabbit with $10 million. That’s another slim decline of 22% as it brings its total to $84 million. $100 million is definitely in the cards now and that’s definitely something I didn’t see coming.
