CW’s former executive Dawn Ostroff, who ran the network when Gossip Girl aired, said the series helped define the then struggling network. In 2008, The New York Times reported the show has had a profound impact on retail, saying Gossip Girl is probably “the first [show] to have been conceived, in part, as a fashion marketing vehicle”. While it has had middling success in terms of ratings, it “may well be the biggest influence in the youth culture market.” On January 26, 2012, in honor of the series’ 100th episode, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the set and proclaimed the date Gossip Girl Day, citing the show’s cultural influence and impact on the economy of the city.

Where To Stream: Netflix

Why You Should Binge: What could give you a momentary break from the coronavirus coverage? Watching rich people behaving badly on Gossip Girl, which ran from 2007-2012. On the show, privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York can hide no secret from the ruthless blogger who is always watching. For some, this will be guilty pleasure entertainment & it is mostly that but the first season, in particular, is very strong & brisk with its salacious storytelling featuring flawed but surprisingly relatable characters despite their lives seeming pretty unattainable by our standards. Things eventually get silly down the road but the show is never dull & it’s a very quick watch. I had to revisit the show for its 10th anniversary back in 2017 for this very website & I blew through it pretty quickly. Sometimes the guiltiest of pleasures, are the most fun to watch. Check it out!
