Avengers: Infinity War Set To Become Fastest Film To $1 Billion At The Global Box Office

All eyes will be on the second weekend of Avengers: Infinity War and one thing is for certain: By Friday or Saturday It will become the fastest film to reach the $1 billion milestone at the global box office.

Working in Infinity War’s favor this weekend is that it faces little to no competition. Opening this weekend is the Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez remake of Overboard and the critically acclaimed, but small, release of Tully starring Charlize Theron. Those films should find some kind of audience but the box office will belong to Infinity War and it should post another stellar showing.

The second weekend of 2012’s The Avengers came down 50% to $103 million while Age Of Ultron eased 59% to $77.7 million. I think the word of mouth on Infinity War is much better than the word of mouth for Ultron which would make me indicate that it won’t see as harsh of a drop in its second weekend. It should be more in line with the original Avengers which bodes well for this installment (it should be noted that next weekend, its third, is also free of much competition so Infinity Wat has ample time to pull in even more money). Tracking has the film grossing $100-125 million this weekend but I’m calling it at $130 million.

Jumping into the fray this weekend is Overboard, the remake of the Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell movie of the same name. This one toplined by Mexican star Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris and reverses the roles from the original. Overboard wasn’t screened for critics and promotion has been light but Eugenio Derbez does have a loyal following and the expectation is that it will bring out Hispanic moviegoers. His last film, How to Be a Latin Lover opened to $12.2 million and I could see a similar result here. I’m calling $11-13 million for the weekend.

Also opening this weekend is Tully, Jason Reitman’s reteam with actress Charlize Theron and screenwriter Diablo Cody. The dark comedy follows Theron as a woman who after having her third baby bonds with her trippy night nanny played by Mackenzie Davis. While the film is currently at a remarkable 94% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not expected to break out in a big way. That being said, it could gradually pull in money based on word of mouth so this will be one to watch in the weeks ahead. I’m calling about $5 million for the weekend.

Check back on Monday for the final box office results.
