Avengers: Endgame Threepeats At Number One While Detective Pikachu Opens Strong

Avengers: Endgame spends a third, and likely last, weekend at number one while Pokemon Detective Pikachu catches some serious cash at the box office.

Avengers: Endgame grossed $63.2 million over the weekend and slid 57.1% in the process. At this point, everyone who has wanted to see it has seen it and now it’s relying on repeat viewings and luring in the uninitiated. The 50%+ drops are not unheard of, especially when the film started as high as it did. Endgame is also pulling in these numbers without the benefit of a major holiday in play and that just makes its box office run all the more impressive.  Among third weekends, Endgame‘s is the fourth-best after Star Wars: Force Awakens ($90.2 million), Avatar ($68.4 million), and Black Panther ($66.3 million). However, Endgame can celebrate the fact that it crossed $700 million at the same pace as The Force Awakens, tying the 16 days it took that film to do so. Endgame has now grossed $723.7 million at the domestic box office and now ranks third on the all-time domestic list, behind only Avatar and The Force Awakens. Internationally, Endgame added another $102.3 million for an international total that now stands at $1.76 billion and a global tally reaching $2.485 billion. The film remains the second highest grossing international and worldwide release ever, trailing Avatar in both categories. At this point, it’s $298 million away from its global tally & $265 million internationally. We have a tight race folks and we will be paying very close attention to where this ends up.

Debuting in second is Pokemon Detective Pikachu with a stellar $54.3 million. The film landed primarily landed where it had been tracking heading into the weekend and it actually beat Endgame on Friday with a gross of $20.7 million compared to Endgame’s $16.2 million. The opening makes Detective Pikachu the largest opening weekend for a video game adaptation ever, topping the $47.7 million of Lara Croft Tomb Raider back in 2001. Pikachu benefitted from kids rushing out to see it and the curiosity of adults who wanted to just see what this was all about. Ryan Reynolds was a huge factor here as his vocal talents likely got plenty of butts in the seats. Detective Pikachu received an “A-” CinemaScore which bodes well for word of mouth leading forward. The film carries a $150 million budget but this is bound to be a worldwide player so the studio is off to a great start. Internationally, Detective Pikachu delivered an estimated $103 million this weekend for a running overseas gross that now totals $112.4 million after opening in Japan last weekend where it has brought in nearly $13 million so far. The film’s international performance is led by this weekend’s opening in China where it has already brought in nearly $41 million.

Debuting in third is The Hustle with $13 million. This is exactly where the film was tracking and it was the top female choice over the weekend, especially on Mother’s Day. It’s not a stellar opening but there is a possibility it pulls an Overboard from last year. That film opened to $14.7 million last year around this time and legged it out to $50 million by the end of its run. The Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson con-artist comedy received a “B” CinemaScore which is much better than the 16% rotten score it received from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dropping to fourth is The Intruder with $7.1 million. The film dropped a surprisingly good 33.8% which means that, despite opening below expectations last weekend, it looks like audiences sampled it a bit this weekend as an alternative to Endgame. The film carries an $8 million budget and has grossed $21.5 million to date. This is going to go out as a modest hit and will make room for more micro-budgeted thrillers along the way.

Rounding out the top five is Long Shot with $6.2 million. The political romantic comedy dropped 35.6% and also saw a nice hold like The Intruder, which it opened against last weekend. Long Shot needed a bigger opening for this hold to be significant but at least moviegoers are giving the well-reviewed film a shot. Long Shot has grossed $19.8 million to date and I still think it’s destined for some cult classic status down the road.
