Avengers: Endgame Directors Joe & Anthony Russo Say Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Look In Endgame Was Her Idea

Despite all the excitement surrounding any new footage of Avengers: Endgame we can get, there was a bit of internet nitpicking that involved Brie Larson’s look as Captain Marvel in the upcoming superhero sequel. I’m not sure how this became a big deal but it actually had Twitter in an uproar and many fans wanted to know whose decision it was to style Larson the way she appears in the film, namely the make-up and hairstyle. Endgame helmer’s Joe & Anthony Russo shed some light on this and it looks like those styling choices cames down to Brie Larson herself.

“She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

The quote from the directing duo was insightful because I had no clue she filmed Endgame before Captain Marvel and they’re also right that as an artist she has a right to explore how the character may look. It’s all a collaborative effort but the fact that they gave their cast freedom to explore these options, shows the amount of faith they have in them.

Brie Larson has also chimed in on the controversy and admits that she may have stumbled a bit initially with the character’s look but she was also working in a shroud of mystery since she didn’t have much information about how the character would be fully formed in Endgame or in her origin film, Captain Marvel:

“This film [Endgame] will always be personally dear to me because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel. We shot this first so I had to stumble and figure out who this character was with no script for this and no script for Captain Marvel, either, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”

The brothers went on to explain that while they  “set the parameters…in terms of what we need,” the makeup and hairstyles of all the characters are actually decided by the actors and their makeup team. This applies to Larson’s look or even Scarlett Johansson’s blonde look in Avengers: Infinity War: “Every hairstyle that Scarlet Johansson has had in every movie that we’ve done has come from Scarlet Johansson.”

So there you have it guys. This is all an evolution as the actors discover who these characters are and they’re just toying with things as artists in that journey of self-discovery. Needless to say, Brie Larson still looks beautiful and I’m sure she will continue to kick ass as the character when Avengers: Endgame opens on April 26.
