Annabelle Comes Home Has Scary Good Preview Night With $3.5 Million

Annabelle Comes Home is heading into the weekend early with a Wednesday launch so the film kicked things off with Tuesday night previews to solid results.

Annabelle Comes Home grossed $3.5 million in Tuesday night previews that began at 6 PM, which is higher than both Conjuring film previews (which respectively earned $3.3 million and $3.4 million). It’s hard to really compare Annabelle to those films since it’s starting its run midweek while those films launched in Thursday films heading into the weekend but it’s still an encouraging start for a universe that continues to prove itself at the box office.

The preview number is also higher than the previews for the first Annabelle ($2.1 million), The Conjuring producers’ production Curse of La Llorona ($2.8 million), the $2.5 million Tuesday night preview of First Purge (a horror film that launched over the Independence Day holiday last year), and just under Purge 3: Election Year ($3.6 million). Annabelle Comes Home‘s Tuesday night is also under Annabelle Creation‘s Thursday night of $4 million and The Nun‘s $5.4 million but, again, they were rolled out differently than Annabelle Comes Home so it’s not a completely accurate comparison.

So why did Annabelle Comes Home decide to open Wednesday with previews on Tuesday? The genre film wanted to get a headstart on the upcoming holiday next week and they also wanted to get some mileage in before Spider-Man: Far From Home opens. It’s a fairly smart move that should work out for the film which has been mostly well-received by critics at 63% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
