Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley is looking to prove there is more than meets to eye as he’s taking on an animated Transformers prequel from a script from Ant-Man and the Wasp writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari.
Entertainment One, Hasbro’s entertainment studio, will develop and produce the film along with Paramount Animation. The film will act as a prequel of sorts to the live-action Transformers films and will look into the origin of the heroic Megatron and the cause of the conflict between the harmony-seeking Autobots and domination-loving Decepticons.
Cooley is quite the talent to land for this project. The director and writer co-wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Toy Story 4 and before that film, Cooley was nominated for the original screenplay Oscar for 2015’s Inside Out.
As for the Transformers franchise, despite some critical lashes, the Michael Bay films have grossed $4.3 billion worldwide during a run that spans 2007-2018. The critical praise that alluded the franchise was finally granted for the well-received prequel, Bumblebee, released in 2018.
