Anyone that knows me is well aware that Kevin Smith is one of my favorite directors and personalities in Hollywood. I’ve enjoyed all phases of his career, from his films, personal projects to his podcasts. The fandom reached a super level when I received a special video shoutout from the man himself and we got to play it during my movie-theater wedding. It’s safe to say that An Evening With Kevin Smith at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con@Home was not to be missed.
A Year Well Spent
During this panel, Kevin Smith gave fans a year in review. He chatted about a variety of projects he’s been working on including his video series, Son-In-Lockdown, a new Funko Pop from Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and the first look at his new movie, Kilroy Was Here.
From the start, Smith is having a great time as he jokes about all the Hall H “line sitters” that would wait hours and days to watch their favorite panels. They’re all having the most comfortable con of their lives this year as they watch all the Hall H panels from their computers or phones.
Smith reminisces about his Hall H panel last year, where he introduced the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot trailer and released tickets to the Reboot Roadshow and how thankful he is for the 60 plus shows him and Jay completed, calling it one of the highlights of his careers. He then jumps into his metaphorical time machine as he talks about going to the Grauman’s Chinese Theater with his dad when he was young and being told that that “one day he’ll be there.” Forty years later, he was and with his hetero life mate to boot. Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes stood on the court of the Chinese Theater and put their hands in cement while cementing their place in Hollywood history.
Son-in-Lockdown
Son-In-Lockdown was next on the docket as Smith called this a family project he’s had the most fun on since filming Clerks. Part of TBS’ Celebrity Show-Off, celebrities are tasked with producing the most compelling content from their homes. The longer celebrities stay in the competition, the more money they raise for their charities, with the last star standing earning an extra donation for his or her cause. We’re on episode 6 and it looks like there’s no stopping him yet.
Masters of the Universe
Another project he’s been working on is a Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a follow up to the classic 1980’s animated series. Smith promises that they’re not reinventing the wheel on the series, but telling the next part of the story. He’s hopeful that the cast, performances, and animation will make all MOTU fans happy.
The Kevin Smith Fan Club
Smith goes on to plug his brand new Kevin Smith Fan Club (which I am a current member of) and dives deep into the details of the fan club, including the paid tiers, available content, and the perks of being a member of the club. From a current member’s perspective, if you’re a Kevin Smith fan, it’s worth the price of admission.
Iron Bob
Next on the year in the review comes an update from the folks at Funko. They’ve just released an Iron Bob Pop! as a part of their San Diego Comic-Con exclusives. On top of that, a 24-inch full-body limited edition Iron Bob figure will be distributed by Robert Kurtzman, which looks incredible.

Smodcastle
The announcement I loved the most was the opening of Smodcastle, a podcast theater that will be located next to the Quick Stop, where Smith’s debut film Clerks took place. It was initially going to open on April 20th this year, but due to the pandemic, the date has been pushed back. It has an expected opening of fall 2021.
Kilroy Was Here
Smith’s upcoming film, Kilroy Was Here, is an upcoming comedy-horror anthology film centered around the phenomenon of the “Kilroy was here” graffiti. Not only did we get some information about the film, but Smith surprised everyone by giving folks their first look at the trailer. While no release date was provided, a potential late 2020 – early 2021 release date was given.
Twilight of the Mallrats
Kev closes out the panel by looking into the future, Twilight of the Mallrats. While making Reboot, the idea to go through with the sequel to Mallrats came to be. The movie will receive a legacy edition through Arrow Video.
As always, Kevin Smith remains one of the most entertaining people on the planet. I can’t get enough of him telling stories of his past and future. Fans of Mr. Smith and his work will love everything about this panel.
