This one is a gut punch for sure. Trailblazing director & writer, John Singleton, has passed away at the far too young age of 51.
Singleton suffered a stroke on April 17 & was in the ICU until his passing today. Earlier today, the family had made the decision to remove Singleton from life support at Cedars Sinai where he was said to be under great medical care. Singleton suffered the stroke at the hospital after heading to the ER due to pain in his leg.
Singleton was a true trailblazer for filmmaking within the African American community, beginning with his two-time Oscar nominated debut, Boyz N the Hood. Singleton spoke from a real place & wanted his movies to be authentic from top to bottom. A lot of his films came from his personal experiences and that’s why they have continued to resonate. Singleton also directed such films as Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Rosewood, Baby Boy, & commercial fare such as 2Fast 2Furious, Four Brothers & the Shaft remake.
Singleton is survived by his mother, Sheila Ward, his father, Danny Singleton and his children Justice, Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis, and Seven.
R.I.P. John Singleton & thanks for sharing your gift with the world!
