77th Annual Golden Globe Awards: The Complete Winners List

The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards aired last night and the ceremony continued the trend of the Hollywood Foreign Press keeping things interesting by offering up a few surprises. Netflix led the nominations going into the night but only took two awards home (Laura Dern’s Best Supporting Actress win for Marriage Story and Olivia Colman’s Best Actress In A Television Drama for The Crown). HBO was the king of television once again with key wins for Succession and Chernobyl with Netflix mostly being shut down in that area. The Irishman, an awards season favorite, went home empty-handed in a bit of a surprise outcome.

There were some surprises to be had. Sam Mendes wasn’t a long shot for a Best Director win but many thought it would go to Martin Scorses for The Irishman but Mendes took it home for his critically acclaimed technical achievement, 1917. The film also took home Best Picture – Drama which makes its Oscar chances certainly more interesting (The Globes and Oscars have matched on the Best Picture winner about 50% of the time). It was a good night for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which took home Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay for Quentin Tarantino and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. Leonardo DiCaprio, who was nominated in the Best Actor -Musical or Comedy category for the film, lost out to Taron Egerton for his role in Rocketman. Egerton also earned a SAG nomination a few weeks ago and now I’m thinking his chances for an Oscar nomination are significantly higher. In the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy category, Awkwafina took home the award for her subtle turn in The Farewell, making her the first Asian-American actress to win the honor.

In the Best Actor – Drama category, Joaquin Phoenix took home the prize for Joker and while Adam Driver had been picking up steam with some key critic award wins, Phoenix may very well be the one to beat for the Oscar. As far as the main categories are concerned, the Best Actor Oscar may be the most fun to watch this year. Renee Zellweger, who has long been the Best Actress favorite for her transformative performance in Judy, also took home the Globe after a 17-year absence from the ceremony.
