341 Feature Films Eligible to Compete At This Years Oscars

As this years Oscar season comes to an end, it has been announced that there are 341 feature films that are eligible to compete for the best picture Oscar this year, the Academy announced Tuesday. While 341 films are able to compete for the coveted award, only a few dozen films will receive nominations when the Academy announces its noms for the 90th Academy Awards on January 23, 2018.

The total number of eligible films is up from last year, when 336 qualified, and 2015, when 305 films were under consideration. The way the number of films are determined is given their theatrical runs. To be eligible, a feature film must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles and with a minimum run of seven consecutive days. Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format. Therefore, in order for a film from Netflix to qualify, the film must sustain at least a 7 day run in theaters.
