1917 Expands To Impressive $37 Million First Place Finish

1917 turned its Golden Globe wins into a solid weekend at the box office and with the film receiving key Oscar nominations on Monday, the road ahead looks bright for the World War I epic drama.

1917 opened to $37 million over the weekend, well ahead of the $25 million the film had been tracking at. The Golden Globe wins and strong word of mouth helped the film exceed expectations. When the film opened in limited release on Christmas Day, the film earned a solid “A” CinemaScore and as it entered wide release, 1917 earned a still impressive “A-” Cinemscore. Having received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director to name a few, 1917 should be a top choice for the older male demographic moving forward. This weekend’s crowds were 60% male while 80% of the weekend audiences as aged 25 or older. Internationally, the film debuted in 30 Amblin and Universal international markets with nearly $20 million, pushing the worldwide total over $60 million.

Falling to second is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which grossed $15.1 million. That’s a drop of 56% from last weekend and the drops have that high because of how much it opened to back in December and because a lot of its days during the month played like a Friday due to the high holiday traffic. The film has grossed $478.2 million at the domestic box office and internationally, the film added another $24.2 million, bringing the overseas total to $511.4 million for a global tally reaching $989.6 million as it pushes toward becoming the seventh 2019 release from Disney to top $1 billion globally.

Jumanji: The Next Level falls to third with a gross of $14 million. That’s a drop of 46.6%, still one of the better holds of the holiday releases that came out in December. The film has grossed $257.1 million at the domestic box office and internationally the film lifted its international total to $414 million after taking in $22.6 million this weekend 65 markets, bolstering the film’s worldwide gross to $671 million.

Opening in fourth is Like a Boss with $10 million. The opening was a tad under expectations which had the film opening in the $12.5-14 million range. The film earned a “B” CinemaScore which isn’t bad for comedy and despite positive test screenings, the film didn’t quite break out beyond the female demo. Like a Boss played to an audience that was 56% female with 65% of the overall crowd coming in aged 25 or older.

Rounding out the top five is Just Mercy with $9.7 million. The film opened well enough and still maintained the “A+” CinemaScore it earned when it opened in limited release on Christmas Day. There’s a chance that film has decent word of mouth leading forward but a few Oscar nominations would’ve helped. The film came up empty-handed when nominations were announced on Monday. The film’s audience was 60% female with 85% of the overall audience coming in aged 25 or older, both figures just a fraction below exits following the film’s limited release.
