War For The Planet Of The Apes Takes The Top Spot At The Box Office

While Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes finished at #1 this weekend, the film’s $56.5 million dollar opening was lower than its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the ApesSpider-Man: Homecoming dropped over 60% in its second weekend and The Big Sick continued to deliver decent numbers in its expansion to more theaters. Broad Green’s Wish Upon, despite being in the PG-13 horror market, fell short of $6 million over its first three days in release.

Despite War for the Planet of the Apes earning less than Dawn, it’s not all bad news for the film. On top of being the best reviewed in the franchise and cementing itself as one of the greatest trilogies of all time, War is also carrying a budget $20 million less than Dawn, which in terms of box office might give it a bit more wiggle room, however but the $150 million production still cost over $50 million more than Rise‘s $93 million price tag.
