Deadline announced this morning that Sony Pictures has won the bidding war for Quentin Tarantino’s ninth and possibly last film. The film currently titled #9 is set to take place in late 60’s Los Angeles focused on the murders committed by Charles Manson and his followers. Some even say that the film may take an Inglourious Basterds technique where Manson may only be seen in a couple of scenes.
After the discovery of Harvey Weinstein’s long history of sexual assault and harassment, Tarantino cut ties with The Weinstein Company, Miramax, and Weinstein himself. Their partnership produced and distributed all of Tarantino’s films up to this point. In leaving TWC, a bidding war began among studios for the chance to produce and distribute his next film. What makes this opportunity unique as well is that it could be his last film. In past interviews, Tarantino has stated that he only desires to make 10 films before moving into theatre or writing a novel.
Sony won out after several other others from Warner Bros. and Universal were turned down by Tarantino’s WME representatives. Disney was the only studio not to bid and Fox gave up earlier in the week.
#9 is set to star an ensemble cast and rumors have it that Tarantino has been looking at Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt for the lead male roles. Tarantino would like Margot Robbie to play Mason murder victim and actress Sharon Tate. Production on #9 is set to start mid next year for a 2019 release and plans are for it to be Rated R similar to his other films.
