Reel Box Office Update: Jumanji Starting Strong

The holiday box office kicked off yesterday and it looks like things are playing out close to what I predicted but it’s still early in the game and the December marathon box office should be a fun one to watch this year.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle is estimated to have grossed $7.1 million yesterday. It took second place behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is looking to gross about $17 million yesterday. Industry projections have the film hitting at least $50 million by Christmas Day, which a chance it could go higher if it surges over the weekend. Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday hurts all the box office a bit but Christmas Day onward is when a lot of these movies will make most of their revenue. Opening day audiences gave the sequel/not a sequel/reboot/not a reboot an “A-” CinemaScore which is very encouraging for word of mouth.

The other Wednesday release, The Greatest Showman, sang its way to an estimated $2.4 million yesterday. This one was a wildcard because reviews weren’t out when I made my predictions but they have been released since. The film is rotten at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes which could be an issue but at its current trajectory, it could come in close to my $20-25 million predictions by Christmas. What is encouraging for the film is that it received an “A” opening day CinemaScore, which means those who have seen it, like it. Could lead to decent word of mouth.

Check back tomorrow as we continue to look at the holiday box office as it progresses.
