Reel Box Office Predictions: Aug 18-20

It’s going to be another slow weekend at the box office as 2 new releases won’t do much to pull the box office ahead of its totals from the same point last year.

From Lionsgate, we have the Hitman’s Bodyguard, which stars Ryan Reynolds opposite Samuel L. Jackson. The film’s reviews have been mixed (43% rottten on Rotten Tomatoes) but even the bad reviews suggest that the film gains a lot of traction due to the comedic chemistry of the two leads. Thus could be enough to make the film a decent sized late summer hit & should secure it a number one opening as Annabelle: Creation will probably see the typical steep horror movie decline. I predict about $18-20 million for the weekend.

Our next new release is Logan Lucky, which is Steven Soderbergh’s first movie in four years. The filmmaker has made a point of saying he is releasing the movie outside of the Hollywood studio system, raising his own marketing funds and partnering with indie distributor Bleecker Street.

The film has received glowing reviews thus far (92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing) but as we know good reviews don’t always guarantee solid box office (I.e. Detroit). The film, starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Riley Keough, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes and Hilary Swank, won’t open huge but it might put up a decent opening before going on to achieve cult status down the road. I predict about $8 million for the weekend.

Check back Monday for the full box office results!
