An Ode to Bad Reels: Titanic 2

No, this is not a sequel to James Cameron’s Titanic. This is Titanic 2 written and directed by Shane Van Dyke and if you are wondering if he made his own Titanic film with this one being the sequel then you would be greatly mistaken. He simply just named his movie Titanic 2 and gained some of the popularity of the critically acclaimed movie that starred Leonardo DiCaprio. Titanic 2 has nothing to do with Leonardo DiCaprio or his character of Jack but rather the voyage of a second ship that is taking the same route and around the same time as the first ship. What could go wrong?

Titanic 2 starts off with a scene of a piece of glacier falling into the ocean killing an unimportant and unexplained character leaving us with some foreshadowing of future events. A scientist played by Bruce Davison is sent by horrible CGI helicopter to investigate what is going on with the iceberg. I am still in amazement that in this terrible movie the filmmaker was able to cast an Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actor like Bruce Davison but that just added to the epicness of this movie. After this opening sequence, we get introduced to Hayden Walsh, who is played by the director/writer, who has purchased a ticket on the Titanic 2. I just laugh at the fact that they made his own character look like the most baller guy in the film who is always accompanied by a group of beautiful women.

Next, we find out that the daughter of Bruce Davison’s character is a worker on the boat and she calls him before she boards the Titanic 2. During the call he warns her of the iceberg that is floating around in the ocean around the area where they will be traveling and instead of looking concern or warning every one of the imminent danger, she simply just tells him that he should see the boat because it is beautiful. I honestly feel like this whole movie would have been avoided if she were to simply realize the situation she was getting informed about.

The ship sets sail and we instantly see how little extras they got to fill the ship with. It seemed like there were more people outside of the ship waving bye to it than there were actual passengers on board. It literally looks like there are just 50 people on this huge ship. They travel fine until the incident finally happens. An inexplicable mid-ocean tsunami causes the iceberg to crash into the ship and this gives us some hilarious dialogue among the crew members and the captain of the ship. The crew hits the alarm and warn the passengers of what just happened and this gives me the funniest visuals of the whole movie. The 50 or so passenger are just standing there looking around with the most confused looks on their faces for way too long until they finally start panicking. They then proceed to start running around as if they forgot how to run or walk and it seemed like they were trying to portray that they were tripping over each other, even though there was plenty of room and not a lot of people for everyone to move around briskly and freely.

During the extraction of the passengers three ship workers, including Bruce Davison’s character’s daughter decided to take the elevator of a sinking ship and somehow escape that but end up at a door they have trouble opening. They finally get it opened but one of the girls gets crushed when it closes. The last two surviving crew members, which I don’t know if I was supposed to care if they were a love interest or not because they never really built up their relationship throughout the movie, they end up in a room filling with water and they see only one swimsuit with an oxygen tank. The girl gets to put it on leaving the guy to drown as the room fills and dies. Bruce Davison flies into the frame once again in a poorly CGI helicopter to rescue his daughter. Also, for some reason they go back to retrieve the drowned body of the guy, she was with and even try to bring him back to life. They ultimately fail at bringing him back to life and then the movie just ends.Titanic 2

Titanic 2 was bad but it still gave me enough humor and cheekiness to keep me entertained throughout the 90 minute run time of this film. It is surprising also that a movie this bad came from a director that gave me movies like, Paranormal Entity and Chernobyl Diaries, movies that weren’t great but I still enjoyed. Titanic 2 is not his best work and though he is mostly known for making knock-off movies, he has done much better work than this. With that said, however, this is still worth the watch with some friend to get a few laughs. Check out the trailer for Titanic 2 below.
