Not only is Amazon fully committed to a Lord of the Rings TV series but they have also handed out a multiple-season commitment to the series.
The streaming service announced today that it had acquired the global TV rights to the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy series and it will be produced in house at Amazon, which could prove to be very lucrative in the long run.
The series will be set in Middle Earth and explore new storylines preceding what was told in The Fellowship of the Ring. The Amazon deal also includes a potential additional spinoff series to go along with the multiple season commitment.
News of this deal leaked 10 days ago when it was announced that Amazon Studios was exploring a potential TV series based on the Tolkien’s books and the subsequent films. This is a big move for Amazon as Netflix is leading the way for original programming via streaming but a brand like this puts Amazon in the game in a big way.
