Coco Threepeats At Number One As We All Wait For Star Wars to Dominate

The last couple of weeks at the box office have been a bit boring but that’s because they were taking a bit of a breather before Star Wars: The Last Jedi prepares to dominate the rest of the year. The upside to the box office taking a break is that holdovers can continue to shine as we head into a very crowded marketplace.

Coco easily maintained its number one position for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $18.3 million. That’s a drop of 33.5% as it brings its domestic total to $135.5 million. Coco is playing very similarly to last year’s Moana which was released on the same weekend three weeks ago and was also number one for three straight weeks before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took over. Coco is a lock for at least $230-250 million when it’s all said and done which is quite an impressive number. Internationally, Coco added an estimated $55.3 million from 35 markets bringing the film’s international total to $254 million for a global tally reaching an estimated $390 million.

Maintaining second place is Justice League which took in an estimated $9.5 million. That’s a drop of 42.4% which is one of the better drops it has had since it opened. That being said, it needed drops like this earlier in its run because its steeper falls in previous weeks really set this one back. The domestic gross is now at $212 million (on a $300 million budget) but it has made up some ground internationally where it has grossed $400 million which brings its global tally to over $600 million.

Staying in third place is Wonder with an estimated $8.4 million. The dropped 30.4% this weekend and brings its domestic total to a marvelous $100.4 million. This is a $20 million film and I still believe no one saw this one coming a few weeks ago. The film still has gas left in it as it should play well during December and could still see $140-150 million by the end of its run.

Landing in third is The Disaster Artist, which surged +431.3% to $6.4 million. The film expanded from 19 theaters to 840 this weekend and A24 says exit polling suggested a continued strong word of mouth. The film continues to expand next weekend and it will be interesting to see if the film will still surge or if its niche audience came out this weekend with little room to increase it further.

Rounding out the top five is Thor: Ragnarok with an estimated $6.2 million. The film dropped 36.4% and brings its domestic total to $301.1 million. The film continues to also perform well internationally with a worldwide total of $833 million, all on an $180 million budget.
